From learning our first sound to being fluent readers - How do we use phonics to teach our children how to read?

At Cherrywood, we use a phonics scheme called "Read Write Inc Phonics"

Please watch the parent video below to find out a bit more information about the scheme:

Learning sounds

As soon as the children are in school full time we begin learning the first set of sounds.

We also use actions to help the children remember the sounds. Please see the video below to see the actions that we use when learning set 1 sounds:

As we move through the Read Write Inc. program we work on the children's fluency skills. Reading speedily, not having to sound out many words, helps the children to really listen to what they are reading and therefore they are able to understand it better. By being able to read words speedily they are also able to focus their attention on reading with expression. The video above shows a few of the strategies that we use in school to boost children's speed and fluency when reading. Please try some of these techniques when you are reading with your child at home to ensure they are moving through the program at a good pace.
